Plant attacked

Symptoms and indications

Control strategy

Helopetis bugs

Young tissue (shoots, inflorescence and young nuts)

Saliva produced by the insect is very toxic and the site of attack is marked by lesions (brown to black in colour). Severe attack leads to dieback of the whole shoot and the tree may appear as if scotched by fire

Apply Karate 5 EC at 5mls/tree

Mealy bugs

Leaves, flowers and fruits

Mealy bugs produce copious white mealy secretions coating the attacked tissue. With heavy infestations the secretion can be seen from a distance. The secretion reduces the ability of the plant leaf to photosynthesize leading to reduced yields.

Apply Selecron 720EC at 7.1mls/tree

Powdery mildew

Young leaves, shoots flowers/panicles and fruits (nuts and apples)

The mycelia caused by the fungus forms a grey or white coating on the surface of the attacked tissue. Infected leaves fall down and flowers fail to open and thus making it difficult for fertilisation to take place leading to reduced nut formation.

Apply Thiovit Jet at 85g/tree

Anthracnose

Tender and young vegetative organs together with nuts and apples

Infected tissues dry out and cling on the branches. Affected nuts and apples dry out and shrivel and remain hanging on the infected shoots.

Apply Score 250 EC at 7.1mls/tree
